BULLDOGS FALL JUST SHORT IN RHODE ISLAND

Andersen Pickard
The Berwick Academy boys varsity ice hockey team trekked down to Portsmouth, R.I., for an afternoon clash with Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday afternoon. The players were eager to return to the ice for their first game of the 2022 calendar year.

The two teams spent most of the first period in a scoreless draw before Portsmouth Abbey notched a late goal just as Berwick’s second penalty kill was nearing an end.

Undeterred by playing from behind, the Bulldogs tied the game midway through the second period as freshman Ryan Dube scored off an assist from junior Freddy Kula. This was Dube’s first goal as a member of the Berwick program, and it certainly came at a convenient time.

Unfortunately, Portsmouth Abbey did break the tie late in the second period, giving them a 2-1 lead entering the final intermission.

After scoring just three goals through the first two periods, these two teams more than doubled their combined goal total in the third. Sophomore Owen Kenney got the scoring started with his own first goal as a member of the Berwick program. He was assisted by post-graduate Asa Forbes.

Although Portsmouth Abbey added another goal of its own, the Bulldogs fought back once again. Sophomore Justin Massa’s shot rebounded to the stick of senior Liam Martin, who tied the game at three apiece.

Berwick took this tie into the final minutes of the game but ultimately dropped the contest, 4-3. Still, the Bulldogs showed signs of life and physicality for the entire contest, and it was rewarding to see players like Dube and Kenney both notch significant milestones early in their Berwick careers.

Statistically, Berwick lost the shooting battle, accruing just 20 shots compared to Portsmouth Abbey’s 40. Of course, allowing more shots correlated to more work for goalie Jared Swisher. The senior saved 36 of 40, giving him a solid 90 percent success rate.
