On their home turf in extremely foggy conditions on Friday, Oct. 16, the Bulldogs battled the Falcons, displaying skillful play after skillful play and ending with a 3-3 draw. The Berwick team matched Newton’s physicality, and put on a show of great energy and dedication on the field. The Bulldogs are now 8-1-1 on the season.

The Falcons scored the first goal of the match 21 minutes in off a corner kick, but this did not deter the Bulldogs. Video footage confirmed that the corner kick should have been a goal kick, but the Bulldogs  persevered and moved forward with even more determination.

Eight minutes later, Sophia DeSimone ‘28 (Dover, NH) scored Berwick’s first goal. Leading up to that goal was this progression: 10th grader Harper Hunter ‘29 (Wolfeboro, NH) made a beautiful pass ahead of her to Phoebe Yaris ‘29 (Raymond, NH). Yaris then dribbled the ball into the box, took a shot and the Newton goalie deflected it; DeSimone then ran onto the deflection and deftly struck the ball into the goal.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, ready to do something about the 1-1 tie. While they did not end up with a win in the end, they played a strong game and should hold their heads high. Three minutes into the second half, off a great corner kick from Carly Shumway ‘29 (Wells, ME), Taylor Caffelle ‘29 scored the Bulldogs’ second goal by kicking a strong volley shot into the net off her left foot. At minute 67, goalkeeper Julia Brennan ‘28 (Exeter, NH) slid forward on her knees to save a Newton shot on a front smother. Brennan and goalkeeper Charlotte Loughlin each played a full half and each played with grit.  With 24 minutes left on the clock and then with 10 minutes left on the clock, the Falcons added goals to the scoreboard, and lastly, off a free kick in the last three minutes of the game, Bulldog DeSimone scored the Bulldogs’ third goal.
Berwick  will take on Pingree School next Wed, Oct, 21 at home. Go Bulldogs!
