Berwick beats LCA

The Berwick Academy Boys Varsity Soccer team took on Eastern Independent League rival Lexington Christian Academy in South Berwick on Wednesday in an early-season match of two undefeated teams.  Berwick came out strong and determined to defend their home turf.  In the 6th minute Julian Vanderpool made a run down the left flank towards the near post, and slid a beauty across the goal mouth that captain Garrett Lincoln flicked with the back of his heel for his first goal of the season and the first of the game.  Five minutes later, Alex Penfold hit a perfect 35 yard set piece to the corner of the six yard line, which Vanderpool slammed home with a diving header for the nicest goal so far of the young season.  In the 17 minute, Ahmed Algamil put Lincoln through with a nice pass in alone on goal.  Lincoln showed good patience in forcing the keeper to make the first move, and then simply tapped the ball past him for a 3-0 lead.  In the 20th minute, Tyler Hall hit a corner that Lincoln nearly converte for his third on the day.  Hall and Vanderpool then connected on a nice give and go that resulted in another try on net by Hall.  The captain did make good on the next play, setting up striker Neal Mendez, who took two touches and pushed it home for a 4-0 lead at the half.

Lexington was not going to go away quietly, however, and came out of the huddle ready to make it a contest.  They scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second frame, cutting the Bulldog lead in half and giving the home fans a scare.  Berwick settled down and in, and in the 53rd minute, put the game out of reach when Hall took another good corner kick that an onrushing Penfold pushed to the back of the net, pushing the game out of reach for a 5-2 result.

Berwick is 4-0-1 on the season and plays Beaver Country Day on Saturday.
