Nicole Fernandes

Kindergarten Lead Teacher
I grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania before attending Boston College as a student-athlete.
I received my Bachelor’s Degree in English and Applied Psychology & Human Development. In addition to playing field hockey at Boston College, I also played for the United States Field Hockey Program as well. I later went back to Boston College and received my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education while interning in fifth and second grade at The Chestnut Hill School in Newton, MA. I taught first grade in Newton Public Schools and Pre-K at Park Street School in Beacon Hill, Boston. I am very excited to begin my teaching as well as coaching career at Berwick. I feel very fortunate to share my passion of field hockey within the same community I am also able to share my love for teaching early childhood education. Some of my interests include traveling, reading, going to restaurants, and spending quality time with friends and family. I look forward to exploring the Seacoast this year, especially with my Golden Retriever puppy!

Why do you enjoy teaching Kindergarten?
I love teaching Kindergarten because it is the most fun yet transformative year! It is truly amazing to witness the growth from September to June. The best part of being a Kindergarten teacher is supporting children towards their “aha” moment of becoming fluent, passionate readers. The students make great strides in both academics as well as social-emotional skills during Kindergarten.

How do you define great teaching?
Authentic relationships are the core of great teaching. I believe the most successful teachers are the ones who know their students both as learners as well as individuals; fully immersing themselves in the process by actively listening to their students while simultaneously embracing the opportunity to learn from their students.

Describe your classroom in five words.
Safe, Respectful, Dynamic, Fun, and Curious.

What do you like best about the Lower School?
The positive energy in the Lower School is contagious! The sense of support and camaraderie in the Lower School stems from the top with Mr. Hawes all the to the children. Our staff genuinely enjoys collaborating and learning from one another. More importantly, we love to have fun! Our students are very sweet and kind-natured children.
