Abby Wood

Pre-Kindergarten Teacher
I grew up in Rye, NH and attended Colby-Sawyer College where I graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development. From the young age of four, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Fast forward to today and I have been teaching Pre-Kindergarten for almost a decade.
Before joining the Berwick family, I have taught at the Newport Montessori School, Children’s Garden Preschool, and The Treehouse School.

With me I bring a passion for early childhood and find joy in incorporating the outdoors into my classroom, as well as sensory, art exploration, and growth mindset.

One of my goals as a teacher is that each day the children leave school knowing they are loved, feel encouraged, and are excited to return the next day for continued fun!

Why do you love teaching Pre-kindergarten?
I love working with children of all ages, but the Pre-K age is my favorite! I believe the Pre-K years are the magical years where children begin to fall in love with a lifetime of learning. At this age, children are inquisitive, full of questions, and are eager to explore the world around them. It’s a gift to witness the beginning of their journey in exploring who they are and what they are passionate about.

How do you define great teaching?
Great teaching occurs when teachers build strong relationships with their students and their families. It's important to know each child as a student, but also as a person. Great teachers are always eager to learn more, are inclusive, nurturing, and are able to adapt their teaching to match what each child needs. A great teacher recognizes that children are our teachers too.

Describe your classroom in five words?
Safe, Joyful, Welcoming, Nurturing, Explorative

What do you like best about the Lower School?
One of the things that I like best about the Lower School is that we truly are one big family. The teachers model what true support looks like and you can see it trickle down as the children apply it to their relationships with one another.
