Exeter 4 – Berwick 1

EXETER, NH –This one would have been ugly if not for Rafe Gaughan (Somersworth, NH). Despite seeing half of his 45 shots in the first period alone, the senior net minder turned aside all but two of them. While this Exeter team did not feature any superstars from teams of the past (in fact, not one player is yet committed to college), it may be the hardest working team Coach Barbin has rolled out in recent years.

 

Berwick needed to bring its A game in order to have a chance, but a defensive breakdown led directly to Exeter’s first goal seven minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Exeter iced the puck and one of their forwards beat the Berwick defense to the puck before tapping it in with a deft backhand touch. In the second period, Berwick gifted Exeter their third goal with sloppy coverage and lazy puck tracking. In the end, some of the Berwick seniors stuck with it to earn the Dogs a goal with less than a minute remaining. There is no doubt that this was a strong Exeter team, but it is also certain that this was one of Berwick’s worst outings of the year.
