Berwick downs Portsmouth Abbey

Five unanswered goals fuel Berwick victory
DOVER, NH -Despite carrying much of the play in this one, Berwick clung to a three goal lead while needing to kill a five-minute major with ten minutes to play. Alex Ramsay (Yarmouth, ME), fought off a shaky start by making three incredible point-blank stops during the kill. With six seconds left on the unreleasable penalty, Portsmouth Abbey finally cashed in to make it 6-4 Berwick.

Berwick outshot Abbey 16-5 in the opening period, yet went into the locker room with only a 3-2 advantage. A neutral zone turnover led to the first goal, and Abbey cashed in on a powerplay minutes later. Eric DeGregorio (Dover, NH) got the Dogs on the board first off a beautiful dish from Brady Desjardins (Westbrook, ME) and a hustle play from Shane White (Londonderry, NH). Next it was Brock James (Falmouth, ME) burying a Paddy Condon (South Berwick, ME) feed underneath the bar and again for good measure after it rung back out of the net. Condon chased down the initial dump from Spencer Aubin (Dover, NH), making it the second heavy forecheck for the Bulldogs on as many goals. Condon then took it upon himself, with a Bulldog powerplay winding down, to go all 200 feet, shaking two forecheckers and dancing a defenseman before popping the goalie's waterbottle for the third score of the game.

The next period belonged to Tyler Gaulin (Kingston, NH). The junior collected a breakout pass from Cole Hernon (Hampton, NH) before setting up Chris Dowd (Danville, NH) for a backdoor tap-in. Three minutes later, Gaulin curled and dragged by his defender on the powerplay before finding Carson James (Falmouth, ME) who touched the puck to Connor Derby (Seabrook, NH) for his third powerplay goal of the season. Just forty seconds later Gaulin streaked down the left side on a two-on-one, feathering one to Dowd again who absolutely hammered it home past the helpless Abbey goalie. Berwick held a 42-10 shots advantage after two.

Holding a 6-2 lead at this point, Berwick struggled to close this one out with conviction. Multiple penalties either put Berwick a man-down or cancelled would-be powerplays. Sunday is a day off for the Dogs before two days of preparation for a home tilt against Brewster on Wednesday. Berwick played one strong period on Friday and two on Saturday. Three strong periods on Wednesday should get the Bulldogs back to .500 before heading off to the Brooks-Pingree tournament next weekend.
